Bitcoin Pizza Day, celebrated annually on May 22nd, is a significant day for the cryptocurrency community. This day commemorates the first use of Bitcoin as a means of payment for ordinary goods - specifically, for a pizza. If you have not heard about this interesting holiday yet, read on for more about its history, trivia, and celebrations.
In 2010, when Bitcoin was just starting out, it was used to purchase two pizzas for an unbelievable 10,000 BTC. This trade took place on May 22nd and is considered the first real transaction where cryptocurrency was used to buy consumer goods. It shows how cryptocurrencies have become a normal part of our lives. This day also recalls the start of using Bitcoin as a means of payment and its market acceptance. Since then, we commemorate this day every year on May 22nd as Bitcoin Pizza Day.
The main character of this story is programmer Laszlo Hanyecz, who was one of the first Bitcoin enthusiasts. His pizza purchase for 10,000 BTC was the first proof that Bitcoin has the potential to become a means of payment for ordinary purchases. Laszlo made his purchase through an internet forum, where another user agreed to transfer BTC in exchange for a pizza.
Today, the value of these 10,000 BTC would be astronomical. At the time of writing this article, it would be approximately 290 million US dollars. If Laszlo held the same volume of Bitcoin, he could today buy over 14 million pizzas (at a price of $20 per pizza), which would certainly be enough to feed the entire Czech Republic and Slovakia together. This sum underscores the growth in Bitcoin's value and its significance for the global financial system.
In honor of Bitcoin Pizza Day, various celebrations are held worldwide where people meet, order pizza, and discuss the development of cryptocurrencies and blockchain. It's an opportunity to meet other cryptocurrency enthusiasts, share experiences, and celebrate Bitcoin's successes.
